The Future Depends on our Actions Today

National Festival of Making, Blackburn.
April 2024.

Activation.

Over the past year Get It Done has been working with the National Festival of Making and The People's Jury of Blackburn with Darwen, to co-produce a piece of public art for Blackburn, responding to the question: what do we need to do in our homes, business and local area to tackle the climate crisis?

The artwork casts a shadow stating ‘The Future Depends on our Actions Today’, drawing attention to the passing of time and the changes in weather as we approach a climate unstable future.

This hidden message, only appearing in the sun, activates the area with a powerful call to action. It transforms the street, prompting people to reflect and take action.

Below the artwork is a QR code linked to a webpage created by us, compiling tips and tricks given by the local Blackburn with Darwen community during the National Festival of Making in July last year. The website also offers local environmental volunteer opportunities and a forum for future climate discussions.

We launched the artwork with a great community event, inviting the Jury and their friends and family to celebrate our process and get involved with some arts workshops. After speeches by NFM, The Jury and Get It Done director Mimi Dearing, we ran a cyanotype sun print workshop, exploring more ways we can use the sun to power our artwork, and a laser-cutting workshop, where people could laser-cut a hopeful climate phrase in a similar style to the artwork and make a keyring.

We want to thank the National Festival of Making for inviting us to deliver this project, and The People’s Jury for being so welcoming, inspiring and motivated. The piece of public art is available to view outside The Making Rooms, 1 Exchange St, Blackburn BB1 7JN.
